Archaeology

In the Middle Ages the MacDonalds ruled the Hebrides and large areas of the west coast of Scotland as Lords of the Isles. Many other families, including MacLeans, MacLeods and Macneils supported the Lords and grew in strength under the Lordship.

The centre of the Lordship was at Finlaggan on the island of Islay. Here the National Museums of Scotland have been undertaking archaeological excavations in cooperation with the Finlaggan Trust. A six year programme has just been completed and funding is urgently required for further work on the Council Island. Excavation of the midden deposits adjacent to the island will provide much information on the feasts held by the Lords, the medieval economy and vegetation.

Opening Hours

In light of the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak the Finlaggan Trust committee has regretfully decided to postpone opening the Visitor Centre for the 2020 season. Whilst this is obviously disappointing the health of our staff, visitors and the local community comes first and the decision was inevitable. Whilst the Centre will be closed for the foreseeable future, the historic site will remain accessible. We would ask, however, that you visit in small numbers and keep a safe distance from your fellow visitors. We hope to have the Centre open again once the current situation improves and will post updates via our website and Twitter feed. Our thanks for your forbearance and continued support.
